Lower Manhattan Cultural Council seeks Marketing & Communications interns to assist the Marketing & Communications Director and Manager on the River To River Festival, Lower Manhattan’s largest free arts festival featuring a diverse line-up of music, dance, film, theater and play activities from New York and international performers. The festival takes place from June 17 to July 15 in a variety of public spaces and venues - from Chambers Street to Battery Park and from Rockefeller Park to South Street Seaport. Interns will need to be available part time in March and April and full time in May, June, July, and part of August.

The ideal candidate should have a basic background and interest in the performing arts, event planning and implementation, and marketing, as well as excellent organizational, strong creative writing skills and knowledge of Mac computer platforms, and social media.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Handling marketing, publicity and digital media including working on print and online advertising campaigns
  • Preparation and staffing of River To River Festival events including distributing materials, networking, and set-up
  • Assisting with the production of festival signage and collateral materials
  • Managing social media outlets, handling press clippings, writing and uploading content to the website and blog and generating e-blasts
  • Communicating with vendors and partners such as designers, printers, and venue managers
  • General administrative tasks as directed by the Marketing & Communications staff
  • Assist with River To River phone line
  • Available to work evening and weekend events as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or education or experience in Arts Administration, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications or related fields
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office for Mac; knowledge of Raiser's Edge and social media management a plus
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Comfortable representing LMCC to the public, on the phone, and at public festival events

Development & Events Intern

LMCC seeks an organized, energetic and hardworking Development & Events Intern to work with the Development Manager, Individual Giving & Special Events. This internship will offer valuable hands-on experience in an arts organization, which includes assisting with LMCC’s annual benefit (The Downtown Dinner), other special events, and the launch of a new membership program. The ideal candidate is highly organized and efficient, and has some experience with fundraising or events management.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Conduct research – including contact and biographical information – on event attendees, new and lapsed donors, and other individuals as assigned
  • Create and update individual and event records in Raiser’s Edge, based on RSVPs, event attendance, giving, and additional research
  • Use the Raiser’s Edge to run queries, reports, exports, and imports as assigned
  • Help maintain development department administrative systems, including departmental database records and electronic and hard files
  • Help track incoming event reservations
  • Provide support leading up to and during special events, including helping with event set-up, check-in, and breakdown
  • Help produce acknowledgment letters for individuals or corporations related to The Downtown Dinner, annual donation campaigns, and membership program
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduates or graduate students in the fields of Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Public Art and Design, Art History, Arts Administration, or similar
  • Independent, hard-working, organized, and experienced with a background or strong interest in the arts, fundraising, or event production
  • Strong office and administrative skills; computer experience including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Mac proficiency a plus
  • Familiarity with databases and an interest in learning how to use Raiser’s Edge 7
  • Available some nights and weekends for openings, special events, and performances
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Available 24-32 hours per week

Web Design & Digital Media Intern

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council seeks a web design/new media intern to assist the Web Designer and Digital Media Producer. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, creative self-starter with a background and/or interest in audio and video production who will be comfortable pitching in on a variety of different projects as needed.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Helping to maintain our website through web page updates and blog posts
  • Help document LMCC public events all over downtown
  • Performing basic post-production work on audio and video recordings, such as logging, evaluation and mastering
  • Collecting visual research to prepare digital artwork for LMCC's website from our archives, as well as the Internet
  • Production assistance at public art events

LMCC is a small, very busy office, and interns will be exposed to every department of the organization: Development, Finance/Admin, Marketing/Communications, and Cultural Programming. Motivated interns will have the opportunity for increased responsibility.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Designing With Web Standards by Jeffery Zeldman
  • Strong knowledge of Mac OS X
  • Proficient in basic web technologies (X/HTML, CSS) and web standards
  • Knowledge of advanced web technologies (Javascript & jQuery, PHP, MySQL) a plus
  • Knowledge of audio and video editing software (Final Cut Pro, Logic, GarageBand, ProTools) required
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite tools (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) preferred
  • Working knowledge of website content management systems
  • Excellent organizational skills and a background in the arts
  • Strong attention to detail and elements of design

Grants & Services Intern

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council seeks a grants and services intern to assist the Grants and Services Department with the administration of its Manhattan Grant Programs and its professional development services for artists. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in learning about how regrant programs work, and about the professional resources artists need. The position is hands-on, and involves direct contact with numerous artists and arts organizations.

The ideal candidate is a highly organized, creative self-starter with a background and/or interest in the arts who will be comfortable pitching in on a variety of different projects as needed.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Scheduling and tracking audits of grantee projects including performances, exhibitions and other arts events and in some cases, conducting audits
  • Receiving and tracking information on grantee events
  • Receiving and archiving grantee project images & documentation
  • Assistance with monthly professional development workshops and grant information sessions
  • Assistance in planning and execution of annual grantee celebration in May
  • Assistance with dissemination of information on grant programs
  • Departmental correspondence
  • Grant data entry and updates
  • Filing, faxing, and copying as needed

Artist Residencies Intern

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council seeks an intern to assist the Residency and Swing Space staff. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, creative self-starter with a background and/or interest in visual or performing arts or arts administration who will be comfortable pitching in on a variety of different projects as needed.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with residency applications including data entry, pre-screening, and organization of work samples for the panel review
  • Researching artists, art organizations, and artist resources for department databases as well as to disseminate to residents, inquiring artists, etc.
  • Compiling information about application opportunities and events for outreach to artists, curators, schools, the media, and the public
  • Assisting staff at public events including weekly salons, open houses, open studios, exhibitions, and performances, including such duties as tracking guest lists, preparing print materials, and attending to catering needs
  • Helping to ensure the maintenance of our various artist spaces throughout Lower Manhattan including day-to-day assistance with artists' access, routine space needs, supplies and visitors.

  • Strong knowledge of Mac OS X

  • A/V, light carpentry and/or other hands-on technical skills welcome
