Fire on Wall Street exposes the passion and power of twenty women in an environment where these qualities are not usually celebrated. In an arresting, raw exploration of the element fire, the women of Ellis Wood Dance manipulate their bodies and command the grandiose architecture of 55 Wall Street with sensual abandon. Sheathed in endless mesh fabric and little else, the dancers writhe and pull its limits, as their embers intensify into a reckless blaze.

"My work rides the fine line between control and freedom. Reaching for pure physical abandon combined with extreme technical prowess, the work drives the dancers toward generous emotional portraits of themselves. I make dances from my gut in the hope that the audience will take a ride with me. Each new work embraces the everyday challenges in life, creating a whirlwind of movement and drama filled with contradictions and dichotomies. Both physically and emotionally, the performers attack space with an unabashed sense of strength and vulnerability. They fly fearlessly into the less comfortable world of the unknown, moving with the intensity of women powerfully revealed." - Ellis Wood

Ellis Wood is the Founding and Artistic Director of Ellis Wood Dance. Her artistic goal is to create ensemble work that merges fiercely technical movement with raw and revealing performance. The company's community-related work crosses cultural, racial, religious, socio-economic, generational, and gender boundaries to bring dance to groups that might not otherwise have this opportunity. Ellis Wood Dance has been in residence at various colleges and universities such as UC Berkeley, Rutgers University, and New World School for the Arts as well as at The Yard on Martha’s Vineyard. Ellis Wood Dance will be in residence at Dance New Amsterdam next March and at New York University in Summer 2007.
