What if construction barriers, fencing, scaffolding, portable toilets and dumpsters were your canvas? OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS The Alliance for Downtown New York, Inc. (“Downtown Alliance”), and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council invite artists to submit proposals that take a creative look at construction sites downtown. Over the course of summer 2007, the Downtown Alliance and the Council will support the installation of three or four projects in and around construction sites downtown. The rebuilding of Lower Manhattan since 2001 has been one of the largest construction undertakings in the history of American cities. Its future promise has meant a noisy and disruptive present -- traffic detours, sidewalk closures, orange cones, Jersey barriers, loud drilling, and trash dumpsters challenge workers, residents and visitors daily. The Downtown Alliance and the Council invite visual projects that re-invent and transform community eyesores into places of attraction, curiosity and anticipation. Proposals in all visual media – paint, collage, light, sculpture, architectural interventions etc. – are encouraged. We will handle permissions from the sites and provide production assistance to execute the projects. Projects will be evaluated in terms of their effectiveness in ameliorating daily life in a construction zone and their feasibility. We will contact the selected project proposals for fuller discussion and budget details by mid-May, 2007. It is hard to pin down an exact site for each project at this
Please send your proposal in hard copy by May 1, 2007 to
