Martha Colburn received a BA at the Maryland Institute College of
Art. She
also studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Colburn’s
work has been exhibited internationally, including the Museum of Modern
Art, PS1, the Whitney Museum of Art, San Francisco Cinematique, the Anthology
Film Archives, all in the U.S., and the Museum of Contemporary Art, in
Lyon, France. “Cosmetic Emergency” will be screened
in the Cannes Film Festival and Gallery Diana Stigter in Amsterdam. Awards
and fellowships include the Dutch Film Fund, the Dutch Ministry of Education,
Culture and Science, the Stadsdeel de Baarsjes Grant, the Thaw Film Festival
Grant, the Chicago Underground Film Festival Grant, the Filmcore grant
of the New York Underground Film Festival, the Maryland State Arts Grant,
and the Sarah Lawrence College Film Award.
Colburn’s work questions the truth value of documentary and “non-fiction.’ It
also deals with fear, hope, anxiety and ideas of the future and the
past in America.
