The Residency:

Q: Where is the residency program currently located?
A:  The Council currently offers Workspace in two locations: 200 Hudson Street, 4th Floor in Tribeca and The US Custom House at Bowling Green in the Financial District. Former locations include the World Trade Center, the Woolworth Building, the World Financial Center, all in Manhattan and DUMBO in Brooklyn.

Q: What facilities are available in the studios?
A: Each studio space accessible 24/7 is approximately 250sqf of raw space with partitions and concrete floors.  Each studio is partitioned without a door, which makes for a very open environment.  There are limited facilities, but we do provide a studio phone, wireless Internet access, lockers for storage, a slop sink, and a small stipend/material fee, depending on funding.  Studios are not open to the public.

Q: What opportunities will I have to show my work to an audience?
A: LMCC organizes programs each residency session, including a weekend-long Open Studio event at the close of the residency and a mid-session Open Hours event.  Throughout the residency, there are also weekly Salon Evenings where guest gallerists, curators, artists, writers, and collectors are invited to share their experience with resident artists in these informal discussions and studio visits. Over the past five years, over 20,000 visitors have attended LMCC’s artist residency events.

Q: How long is the residency program?
A: The new residency season is now 9 months long, September through May.

Q: How many participants are in the program?
A: Each session has about 15 visual artists and 4-5 writers. We received over 1,000 applications for our last season. For current season, please visit www.lmcc.net/workspace

Q: Who can apply?
A: The residency is open to emerging and early mid-career artists and writers. Artists work in all disciplines including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, film/video, installation, sound, performance and new media. Writers work in all genres including fiction, non-fiction, playwriting/screenwriting, and poetry are encouraged to apply.  Collaborative pairs of two are welcome to apply, sharing one space and one stipend.

Q: Can international artists apply?
A: Yes, international artists can apply.  However, LMCC provides work space only, NOT live space. Additionally, international artists are responsible for their own visa, travel, living and housing costs. The small stipend/materials fee will not be sufficient for living expenses. Plan on having other income.

Q: When to apply
A: The Open Call including deadline and info session for the next season will be announced on our website in the New Year.  If you are not already on our mailing list, please subscribe.
