INTERVIEW

Name: Dan Tague
Where are you from: New Orleans, LA
Where do you live/work: Brooklyn, NY
Your website (if any): www.dantague.com

How do you normally come up with an idea or project for your artwork? Can you run us briefly through your thought process and work process?

Serendipity plays a big part in my work. For instance, on a recent trip to the stock market, in the midst of a completely stressed environment, I noticed a man showing pictures of the beach to a co-worker. This disparate arrangement of images sparked the idea to put the sound of the stock market into a seashell. The image may be opposite but the sound is very similar.

Do you have an unrealized dream project? (no matter how improbable, absurd, costly, etc. it might seem)

I would like to project images of US policies that have caused war, unrest, civil injustice nationally and internationally since 1974. In front of these images would be a fluid disco dancer practicing moves to a song played on headphones seemingly oblivious to the images and sounds of the scenes portrayed.

What is your solution to artist’s or writer’s block?

Get out of the studio, get a drink, and change my surroundings. And if that doesn’t work I lock myself inside and watch campy 80s movies for days.

What is your favorite website and why?

EBay! I can find anything I need to make my absurd art possible. 3-inch model of a B52 bomber, raccoon tail cap, pink boxing gloves, lawn flamingos, Pee Wee Herman bobble head, bowling pins…
