Lower Manhattan Cultural Council has partnered again with General Growth Properties (GGP) to program a new Swing Space located in the heart of the historic South Street Seaport district. Formerly a retail clothing store, 159 John Street is particularly well-suited for site-specific installations and exhibitions.

Space at 159 John Street is generously donated by General Growth Properties.

La Superette

La Superette is an annual art event held during the holiday season in early December. A temporary store is installed in a storefront or gallery space, in which artists sell functional and affordable art in multiples. In addition to the sale, musical performances and video screenings run throughout the day, adding to the festive atmosphere.

La Superette was founded in 1998 in Paris, France by Tali Hinkis, Marie Daubert and Tracy Rolling while in school at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 2001, Hinkis, a multidisciplinary artist, moved to New York City and began producing La Superette in America.

In 2007, Ignivomous took over production responsibilities and continues to push the event in new creative directions while staying true to the craft aesthetic at its roots. Ignivomous is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that presents, nurtures, and develops new genres, art forms, mediums and extremes of expression.

La Superette 2008, running from December 12 – 14, promises to be an exciting event, with installations by Yoav Bergner and Kim Holleman, and baked treats by Sweet Tooth of the Tiger. In addition, Ignivomous is publishing a full color book documenting the first 10 years of La Superette, with contributions from many of the artists who have helped grow the event.
