Xavier Cha

Xavier Cha, born 1980 in Los Angeles, currently lives and works in New York, NY. She received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002 and a MFA from UCLA where she worked with Charles Ray, Nancy Rubins, and Chris Burden among other UCLA faculty from 2002-2004. Xavier Cha's performance-based work revolves around systems of social exchange and hierarchies of space (both physical and psychological). Her performances, installations and videos subtly distort these ideologies by re-contextualizing culture, desire, the individual and community. A frequent collaborator, Xavier has invited dancers, musicians, and mystics- among many others- not only to participate in her projects, but also to become protagonists of the work. Xavier's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, as well as internationally including the Moscow Biennial, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art (UK), the Sculpture Center, Asia Society Museum, Hammer Museum, and MoCA Miami. Xavier Cha is represented by Taxter and Spengemann Gallery in New York.
