Edward Schexnayder
2009 Swing Space Resident, 77 Water Street
Edward Schexnayder was born in Gallup, New Mexico, raised in sunny southern California and New Orleans, Louisiana, and currently lives in Brooklyn. He studied painting and philosophy at the University of New Orleans, obtaining a BFA and BA respectively in 2002. He received his MFA from Pratt Institute in 2007 and was a studio participant in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in 2008. Edward’s painterly practice is concerned with folk/craft art and modernist abstraction, particularly his inherited American traditions.
Edward was recently an invited artist-in-residence in Art in General’s Eastern Europe Residency Exchange program in Zagreb, Croatia with the HDLU (Croatian Association of Artists). He has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. He recently showed at the National Museum and Art Gallery, Gabarone, Botswana, and was invited to participate in the 3rd Guangzhou Triennial, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China.
In Swing Space, Edward will be working on a large “quilt” painting along with other works. These will be made from materials collected from the surrounding Lower Manhattan area of the residency.
