James N. Kienitz Wilkins

James N. Kienitz Wilkins is an artist and filmmaker educated at the Cooper Union School of Art. He was raised in Maine and currently lives in Brooklyn. His work tends to negotiate the void between film and video while assessing the assumptions of progress, replacement and control that seem to define today's society. He has screened his short videos and 16mm films in a variety of group shows and alternative film festivals. In 2008, he received grants from both the Jerome Foundation and the Experimental Television Center. James is a principal of The Automatic Moving Company, an emerging creative organization involving artists such as regular collaborator Mike Crane as well as Eugene Wasserman, who is composing original music for Public Hearing, James's Swing Space project.
Public Hearing takes a real small town public hearing and applies the form of a feature film. It will be filmed in the Swing Space entirely in close-up and on black-and-white 16mm film. The project experiments with the dissemination of public information, the privilege of representation and the democratization of humans with their objects.
