Jessica Bruah

2010-2011 Swing Space Resident, Building 110: LMCC’s Arts Center At Governors Island

Jessica Bruah is a photographer born and raised in Illinois. Her recent work revolves around the surreal and layered identities of specific tourist areas. She received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2009 and her BFA from Columbia College Chicago in 2004. She has exhibited work both nationally and internationally, including shows at Jen Bekman Gallery in New York City, Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago, and Photo-Eye Gallery in Santa Fe. In 2008 Bruah was chosen for Humble Arts Foundation’s 31 Under 31: Young Women in Art Photography. Her work is currently featured on Photo-Eye’s online Photographer’s Showcase. Jessica currently works and lives in Brooklyn.

For the LMCC Governors Island Residency, Bruah is working on an installation of postcards titled Governors Island, 10004. She hopes to bring an alternative post office back to the Island while collaborating with the visiting tourists. The postcard racks will contain images taken by the photographer herself, and viewers will be encouraged to choose a card and mail it from the installation.
