Luke Leonard/Monk Parrots

2010-2011 Swing Space Resident, 14 Wall Street, Vault

Luke Leonard is a director of new theatre and Artistic Director of Monk Parrots. His stage direction has been praised as “bold and experimental…a pure theatrical experience” (nytheatre.com). Directing credits include: Mac Wellman and David Lang’s opera The Difficulty of Crossing a Field (nominated for eight 2010 Austin Critics’ Table Awards including “Best Opera”), and the first ever Italian translation of Israel Horovitz’s The Indian Wants the Bronx in Spoleto, Italy. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from The University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from Brooklyn College.

Monk Parrots, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit performing arts organization founded in New York City. Monk Parrots contributes to culture through presentations of time-based artworks, encourages interdisciplinary and international exchange, fosters creative approaches to theatre making, and provides opportunities to artists.

During their Swing Space residency, Luke Leonard/Monk Parrots will develop a workshop presentation of Gay Rodeo By-Laws, a new performance event about “citizens” and society viewed at a distance, questioning Western heritage through open-ended symbols, actions, visual fields, music, and text, evoking a journey through the "world" of GRBL.
