Stella Yoo

2009 Swing Space Resident, 77 Water Street

Stella Yoo is interested in the urban landscape in order to explore the transformation of a space. She uses a combination of drawing and photography to create a feeling of history and time past within a space. By using these different elements as her inspiration, she presents a body of work filled with proliferating lines and shifting directions, which portray a sort of decomposing scene.

Yoo holds both a BFA and MFA from Honk-Ik University’s College of Fine Arts and the Graduate School of Painting, and has completed the course of Fine Arts Philosophy Doctor. Following her studies in Seoul, Korea, she came to New York where she received a MA in Communication Arts from New York Institute of Technology. Yoo has exhibited internationally in the Central Academy of the Fine Arts in Beijing, China, as well as in Seoul, Korea, Tokyo, Japan, and New York City. Her grants include the First Prize in painting in the 22nd Korea Grand Art Exhibition in 2003 and the William Bradley Bettridge Memorial Scholarship in 2008.

During her stay at Swing Space, Stella Yoo will be developing her project, Melting Pot, and will create a site-specific work which corresponds with her given studio space.
