Thoughts?

Neo-Hegelian dialecticism subverts a true comprehension of the art object (object as opposed to subject) because it reifies in tautological terms the work's punctum. If punctum (being an alternative to that castigated term "center") has been all but dismissed except as a literary funbag, then can we truly come to terms with an ambiguous nexus of Meaning Production?

I went to college with a girl who was known for her literary funbags. As well as her punctum.

punctum, schmomktom...gelassenheit!

"True" comprehension? How old fashioned. And apparently, as your entry suggests, we can come to a lot of terms - as for their 'meaning production', that's another story.
Art isn't about meaning. And 'punctum' is not the same thing, nor does it have anything to do with a 'center.'
The word punctum was popularized by my good, dead, scientology-loving friend, Roland Barthes in his book, Camera Lucida. It's a wonderful book. When I read it, I was convinced Barthes was right about everything. I was wrong, but it's still a beautifully written book.

His argument - good photography's got punctum (a prick) which has nothing to do with artfulness. Something in photography either pricks you or it doesn't. It's not 'meaning' in the broad sense he's talking about. He's talking about an entirely subjective moment.
Therefore: photography is not an art.

In response to Perry: I once dated this guy who liked to argue. I hate to argue. I quickly learned that I had a much bigger vocabulary than he did, and I could cut any argument short by using words he didn't understand. It wasn't that I was smarter-- I just intentionally confused him by sounding really intelligent.

In response to Anonymous: Good points. I'm tired of blogging for now though.
