Preemptive Media Workshop
June 24, 1-5pm

Winners of the 2005 Social Sculpture Commission awarded by Eyebeam and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council

Preemptive Media (Beatriz da Costa, Jamie Schulte and Brooke Singer) is holding a public workshop on June 24th from 1pm-5pm at Eyebeam, 540 W. 21st Street between 10th & 11th Avenues. During this workshop Preemptive Media will present and field-test AIR (Area’s Immediate Reading), a work in progress being developed as the 2005 Social Sculpture Commission awarded by Eyebeam and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

AIR is a networked, social experiment in which individuals will self-monitor the byproducts of fossil fuel combustion by carrying small, portable devices. These devices will display current levels of air pollution and the location of other roaming AIR devices for participants to better understand that they are part of a nomadic network. Online viewers can send text messages to prompt people to go to specific locations or volunteer to become a carrier to keep the network “moving and alive.” Data from the devices will transmit to a central database. This information will be dynamically visualized along with other information on a digital billboard in Lower Manhattan and the web when the project launches in September 2006.

For more information on this workshop, registration and Preemptive Media please visit http://www.eyebeam.org/engage/engage.php?page=unique&id=93

DCA's FY2007 PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD PROPOSAL DEADLINE: JULY 24, 2006

From our good friends at the Department of Cultural Affairs:

The Department of Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce program Guidelines for
nonprofit New York City arts and cultural organizations seeking public service awards. Through these awards,
the Department supports cultural services provided by the city's arts and cultural organizations.

DCA will consider proposals in every cultural discipline and from every area of the city. The fundamental
requirement for all proposals is that there be a cultural activity of recognized quality accessible to the public.
The funded services can be as different as the organizations providing them, but they will all have a common
commitment to the theme of public service. The key objectives of the Department in supporting cultural
services include public access, artistic creation and dialogue, arts-in-education, services to the field,
preservation and stability, and audience development. All proposed services should attempt to promote public
participation in a manner appropriate to the project. Finally, the services must occur within the City’s fiscal year
(July 1, 2006-June 30, 2007). Any activity before July 1, 2006 or after June 30, 2007 cannot be considered for
funding.

Artist Driven International Exchange

brand-1.gif

Please go to:

www.artistexchangeinternational.com

From the site:

The mission of Artist Exchange International is to create frameworks for artists to engage in dialogue about the possibility of effecting change through art. The exchange was originally created as a mechanism for organizing multi-level response to 9/11 for New York City artists, but it quickly became national in scope.

As we communicate with artists in other countries, our project has become a public forum for international exchange through public exhibitions, open studios, panel discussions and symposia. Artist Exchange International reaches out from the private studio to the greater public community.

Apply Now and Create, Rehearse, Present..

TO DO list for artists:

1. Find space
2. Create, rehearse, present

What if we took care of #1 for you?

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space program provides artists and arts organizations with rent-free space to create, rehearse, and present work.

It’s that simple.

In partnership with area landlords, LMCC makes vacant space downtown available to artists, curators, and cultural organizations on a temporary basis for projects. And not only that, but Swing Space artists and art groups are also eligible to apply for stipends ranging from $300 to $3,000 to support project costs.

Proposals are accepted twice a year through an open call and reviewed by a panel of artists, arts professionals, and LMCC staff.
