Dance Conversations @ The Flea - REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

Dance Conversations @ The Flea 2008/2009

Curated by Nina Winthrop and Taimi Strehlow

Proposal Deadline: Friday June 13, 2008

Proposals are now being accepted for the 2008/09 season of Dance Conversations @ The Flea, a free monthly series at The Flea Theater, curated by Nina Winthrop and Taimi Strehlow. Dance Conversations @ the Flea features works in progress by emerging and mid-career choreographers, followed by an open discussion between the artists and the audience, moderated by choreographer Nina Winthrop and special guests. Each evening, four choreographers will have the opportunity to share 10-15 minutes of work.

Choreographers and companies who have participated in recent years include Rebecca Lazier, Daniela Hoff, Andrea Miller and Claire Porter. Moderators have included John Jasperse, Amanda Loulaki, Christopher Williams, Melinda Ring and Levi Gonzalez. Now entering its sixth season, Dance Conversations @ the Flea was created so that artists working in the field of dance could have their work seen in a professional and informal setting by other established and emerging choreographers as well as fellow dancers and enthusiastic audience members. Dance Conversations @ the Flea encourages the development of innovative work and ideas and promotes provocative and intimate dialogue between artists and audiences.

The dates of Dance Conversations @ the Flea 2008/2009 are:

Tuesday, October 7 @ 7pm
Tuesday, November 11 @ 7pm
Tuesday, December 9 @ 7pm
Tuesday, January 6 @ 7pm
Tuesday, February 3 @ 7pm
Tuesday, March 3 @ 7pm
Tuesday, April 7 @ 7pm
Tuesday, May 5 @ 7pm

Dance Conversations will take place in the main theater space of The Flea or a nearby space. The stage dimensions are approximately 24' X 24', but this may vary month to month. Please note that the series cannot support work that includes video, and in general, technical requirements must be kept to a minimum. Only one proposal per choreographer will be accepted.

The application form is available at: http://www.theflea.org/dance/index.htm

Completed application and requested materials must be received at The Flea Theater no later than Friday June 13 at 5:00 PM.

Abrons Arts Center Artist-in-Residence Workspace Program

Henry Street Settlement’s Abrons Arts Center Program provides free studio space for one year (starting in late September) for six to eight New York City visual artists. Painters, printmakers, sculptors, or installation artists work in a collective studio at the Abrons Arts Center located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The Abrons Arts Center’s goal is to “provide cultural opportunities that reflect the ethnic diversity and artistic wealth of the Lower East Side.” The Workspace Program supports this goal through a range of opportunities for artists-in-residence.

Among the artists selected for the A.I.R program are painters, printmakers, sculptors, or installation artists, who work in a shared workspace. In addition, a clay artist works in a separate shared space adjacent to the Center's ceramics workshop.

The Workspace program hosts a year-end open studio exhibition of work created during the year; facilitates studio visits from arts world professionals; provides a range of career development opportunities; and offers opportunities to become involved with other Henry Street and Arts Center programs.

For more info, application guidelines and materials, please visit the Henry Street Settlement website.
