Workspace Resident Mike Estabrook at Openings Art Space

2007-2008 Workspace Resident Mike Estabrook will be featured in a two-person show with Vandana Jain at Openings Art Space
at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York. Gods and Monsters opens tomorrow, Wednesday August 27th, with a reception from 7-9 pm and will be on view until September 30th, 2008.

"Vandana Jain and Mike Estabrook will be featuring a variety of new drawings and paintings. Jain's work is born from the language of icons, heraldry and corporate logos, while Estabrook creates grotesque imagery that is often informed by the archetypes of today's political pantheon. Though they approach their subjects in very different ways, Jain and Estabrook are both working with the symbols that represent the beliefs of contemporary global society."

Language Barrier by Alina and Jeff Blumis

Language Barrier is an ongoing project by Alina and Jeff Bliumis, artists originally from the former Soviet Union. For the site-specific Language Barrier, Lower Manhattan, the artists selected five different locations, each chosen for its contemporary and historical significance and will intervene along various corridors with piles of foam dictionaries. Practical and theoretical considerations meet formally during this ephemeral urban intervention, making visible our daily negotiation of barriers both physical and social.

FOR MUSICIANS - The Rhythm Road - American Music Abroad Program

Audition and Application Information

Program Summary

The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad is a partnership between Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program is designed to foster cultural exchange with audiences worldwide through performance and educational outreach. Selected ensembles tour to such regions as Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East for approximately one month. International activities include public concerts, master classes, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, jam sessions, media outreach, and collaborations with local musicians.

The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad tours operate under the official auspices of the U.S. government. The U.S. Department of State funds international travel, hotels, & meals, and awards a modest tour honorarium to each musician. JALC organizes the tours and coordinates the auditions, which are judged by professional musicians. Selected quartets will also perform two free public concerts, at JALC’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and in Washington DC. All events nationally and internationally may be recorded and broadcasted non-commercially.

Audition Criteria

Each musician must be at least 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and hold a valid U.S. passport.
Applying ensembles must be comprised of exactly four musicians.
Rhythm Road bands must perform in one of U. S. State Department’s selected American musical styles: jazz, urban/hip hop, or American roots music (including blues, bluegrass, Cajun, gospel, zydeco, and country).
Each musician may perform with only one band, and each band can be considered for only one category (jazz, urban or roots).
Successful applicant ensembles are required to demonstrate artistic integrity, musical ability, superior educational ability, and knowledge of American music/culture.
Applicants must be amenable to rigorous traveling and performance conditions, as touring regions and itineraries may be challenging.
In addition to musical performances, selected groups will host educational activities that include, but are not limited to, workshops, master classes and outreach activities.

USArtists International Announces Global Expansion

Grants from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
and Trust for Mutual Understanding Allow for Program Growth

Baltimore, MD - July 21, 2008 - Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation announces a major expansion of USArtists International (USAI) effective immediately. The Foundation received grants of $500,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and $100,000 from the Trust for Mutual Understanding in support of USAI. A program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, USAI is the only national initiative solely dedicated to promoting the work of American performing artists abroad. Formerly limited to supporting dance and music ensembles invited to perform at international festivals in Europe, USAI will now encompass festivals anywhere in the world outside the United States. The program will also be open to support American theater companies and solo performances in all performing arts disciplines.

New guidelines for USAI are available online at www.midatlanticarts.org. The deadlines for the program are September 8, 2008 for projects taking place between November 1, 2008 and October 31, 2009; January 9, 2009 for projects taking place between March 1, 2009 and February 28, 2010; and May 4, 2009 for projects taking place between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010.

USAI is committed to ensuring that the impressive range of expression of the performing arts in the United States is represented abroad. The program works to strengthen the creative and professional development of American dance, music and theatre artists by providing support for their performances at significant international festivals. Through the participation of exemplary American performing artists, USAI helps develop audiences for, and greater appreciation of, the excellence, diversity and vitality of the American arts.

In the United States, the public and private sectors work collaboratively to support the arts. USAI continues that important tradition with support provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding.

For the 2008 cycle, USAI is supporting thirty-three ensembles at festivals throughout Europe. Festivals include the North Sea Jazz Festival, Netherlands; International Tanzmesse, Germany; 8th World Symposium on Choral Music, Denmark; IDANS - Istanbul International Contemporary Dance Festival, Turkey; Hellenic Festival, Greece; Cheltenham Jazz Festival, UK; 10th Open Look Festival, Russia; and the Lyon Dance Festival, France. Grantees range from the Seattle Chamber Players of Washington to the Rebirth Brass Band in Louisiana and from the Trisha Brown Dance Company in New York to Alonzo King's Lines Ballet in California. A complete listing of artists and festivals can be found at www.midatlanticarts.org
