Lentspace Calendar
LMCC provides artistic programming during weekday lunchtimes at LentSpace between May 15 and late fall. Events are free and open to the public. All events begin at 1PM.
May 16, 2012 – The Xylopholks
The XYLOPHOLKS are a dynamic group of musicians playing xylophone-based novelty ragtime music from the 1920s while wearing furry animal costumes. The Xylopholks want to make people happy and perhaps even dance, and have been a part of the highly selective MTA MUNY (Music Under New York) program for several years. In addition, the Xylopholk have performed at other HSC events, and have become our “house” band.

May 17, 2012 – JOE FIEDLER'S BIG SACKBUT
Featuring: Josh Roseman, Curtis Hasselbring & Marcus Rojas. Presented in association with The Jazz Gallery.

Trombonist/Composer, Joe Fiedler is known to critics as "among the most impressive trombonists to emerge in the past couple of decades" (Harvey Pekar, Signal to Noise) and "an MVP in configurations that range from salsa bands to the jazz avant-garde" (Time Out New York). This performance features his latest project, "Big Sackbut"-- showcasing an all-star line-up of low brass soloists. The unique instrumentation of 3 trombones and tuba draws its inspiration from other horn driven ensembles such as The World Saxophone Quartet. The repertoire features a mix of originals along with new interpretations of covers ranging from Bennie Wallace to Willie Colon."
--"You will be hard pressed to find more adventurous and imaginative use of the trombone as an instrument of musical expression."—International Trombone Association Journal.
May 22, 2012 – Blake Carrington
With shotgun mic and wireless transmitter in hand, Carrington will search Hudson Square high and low in his new performance The Ornithologist Ghosthunter, created specifically for LMCC's LentSpace. The roaming sound performance is an homage in equal parts to naturalist David Attenborough and Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) research pioneer Friedrich Jurgenson. It follows a previous project Suomenlinna Ornithological Society, a geo-tagged sound installation on Governors Island featuring electronic birdsongs in an augmented ambient soundscape.

June 5, 2012 – Talibam!
Former LMCC residents Talibam! will perform “TALIBAM! & SAM KULIK DISCOVER ATLANTIS”. Imagine Frank Zappa’s iconic album Joe's Garage meets the movie Total Recall meets Spongebob Squarepants. Talibam! and Kulik tell a story that uniquely weaves current events, comedy, Hollywood plot lines and contemporary music. At times the album resembles a radio play, at times opera, and often the trio lets the music make a statement of its own and drops the narrative to let loose some serious freewheeling instrumental jams and tuneful songs. Talibam! and Kulik play nearly a dozen undersea characters and as many instruments. The underwater world that Shea, Mottel, and Kulik create is fascinating and new, yet eerily similar to our own.
New York-based duo Talibam! (keyboardist Matt Mottel and percussionist Kevin Shea) is a contemporary study in the absurd, merging Zappa and Sun Ra with Krautrock, electro-rock, theater, and sketch comedy, and moving toward, the development of a new language.
