Capital Grants for Culture

3 Legged Dog at 80 Greenwich Street, recipients of a 2005 Capital Grant

The Capital Grants for Culture program was designed to provide matching grants of up to $225,000 to organizations based in Lower Manhattan to secure long-term space or to renovate and expand existing space; and planning grants of up to $50,000 to cultural organizations seriously evaluating relocation to Lower Manhattan. In the program’s first year $200,000 in additional grant funds were provided by the Alliance for Downtown New York.

LMCC actively sought ways to provide technical assistance to grantees to support project planning and consideration of the operational impact of facility ownership or upgrade. We worked with Nonprofit Finance Fund in 2007 and 2008 to offer one-day workshops for grantees on nonprofit finance, facilities planning, financing and fundraising, followed by 2-day intensive financial clinics involving the analysis of 5 years of past financials. In 2008 we opened these workshops to arts organizations throughout New York.

Over three grant cycles, the program has awarded a total of 19 capital & renovation grants, and 8 planning grants totaling $1,459,000, accompanied by a $74,741 investment in technical assistance workshops led by Nonprofit Finance Fund.
