Indonesian Contemporary Art Exhibition in the Lower East Side
Lower East Side gallery MARC STRAUS presents an exhibition of five major Indonesian contemporary artists this summer, four of whom have never before exhibited work in the US.
These painters and sculptors have established careers in their home country, and their work often resonates with Javanese culture. Despite their hometown notoriety, they are virtually unknown in the west, as Indonesia has yet to enjoy any real attention from the US and European art scenes. This is starting to change, and MARC STRAUS hopes that this exhibition will serve as a major catalyst in this process.
The gallery’s owner opened the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill, NY with his wife Livia almost a decade ago, and has been known in art circles as a collector for the last forty years.
MARC STRAUS is housed in a renovated three story former tenement building at 299 Grand Street, New York, NY 10002, and the exhibit will open next Wednesday, June 27th.
