BEAUTIFUL DISCOVERY
The Work of Joe Ben Plummer

Opening October 20, 2006 5 to 8 PM
Continuing through December 22, 2006

Nobody burned wood the way Joe Ben burned wood.

Joe Ben Plummer (1968 – 2004) specialized in the field of pyrography, more commonly known as “wood burning.” Etched into the surfaces of scraps of wood collected from the streets of the Lower East Side, his work reveals what is beneath the surface of the worlds of professional sports, music, and popular culture.

Through the merging of what ordinary people throw away and what extraordinary people hide from view, Joe Ben’s art forces all of us to confront what we’re missing, but with joy rather than malice. The work is as much a celebration as a critique, toeing the foul line between humor and pathos.

And now for the first time, you in Beautiful Discovery you could see a wide-ranging selection of Joe Ben’s work all under one roof.

Beautiful Discovery is organized by the Plummer Family, Barbara Reiser, Tom Sachs, and Gregg Woolard.
