SPEED LIMIT
REDHEAD
INVITES YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN AN EXPERIMENT: A HISTORY OF WOMEN’S
ART.
The experiment begins February 24th.
THOUGH WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS, SPEED LIMIT REMAINS
ON VIEW UNTIL MAY 26TH.
What constitutes a history of women’s art?
Who can write that history? These are the questions facing Speed Limit.
We believe potentially anything and anyone can, but then how would that
history be differentiated from anything else? Speed Limit is an experiment
attempting to arrive at an open, participatory, physical history of women’s
art. This is Wikipedia in 3-D, where your concern is enough to qualify
your involvement.
THE GALLERY IS OPEN. THE GALLERY IS EMPTY.
On February 24th, 2006 Speed
Limit began. The gallery was empty and ready for contributions.
What could be contributed? Works of art, artifacts, texts, etc. that
participants believed could contribute to a history of women’s
art.
EVERYONE WAS WELCOME TO CONTRIBUTE.
Note: This means everyone. You didn't have to be female to contribute.
Perhaps your work shared concerns with a particular female artist. Perhaps
you wanted to pay homage or critique a particular female artist.
The point is: if you felt it is worth considering part of a history of
women’s art in any way, it was right for Speed
Limit. Naturally, this had the potential to produce a contentious history,
but that will only allow us to see more clearly where the fault lines
lie. Contributions were especially encouraged from older
women and about older women so that Speed Limit would not function merely
as a survey of recent trends.
THOUGH WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS, SPEED LIMIT REMAINS
ON VIEW UNTIL MAY 26TH.
DIRECTIONS
Take the 2/3 to Wall Street. Exit at
