ATTENTION,
HIGH SCHOOL ART STUDENTS. IT’S TIME TO GET UNPROFESSIONAL.
UNPROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
Lower
Manhattan Cultural Council’s
Visual Arts Study Program:
Program Overview
The program will last six weeks with students and artists
meeting three times a week for four-hour sessions. Each week will be led
by a different artist chosen for their distinctive approach to making art
in New York. Held in the context of a group exhibition titled “At
Hand” at REDHEAD, students will have the rare opportunity to dissect,
discover, and respond to the works in the space with a range of artists
resulting in a student produced catalogue of the exhibition.
The Trip
At the beginning of each week, the group will meet at REDHEAD
to meet the week’s artist presenter. From there we will proceed
on a field trip – an art studio, private art collection, park,
or other location that serves as a place of inspiration for the artist,
giving the students an inside look at both the artist’s process
and some of the best kept art secrets the city has to offer.
The Project
The second session will give the students the opportunity
to meet one on one with the artist to discuss the exhibition at REDHEAD.
As many of the presenting artists will also be in the show, this will
provide the students with the rare opportunity to get into the artist’s
head and formulate highly nuanced, individual responses to the work through
the medium of their choice culminating in a student produced catalog
of the show.
The Talk
The final session of each week will be a more formal presentation
by the artist of his/her work. This exchange with the artist will allow
students the opportunity to discuss the pertinent artistic and critical
issues of the artists work. Following the talk, the students will have
the opportunity to discuss the artist and his/her work in context of
the entire program.
