Apply for Paris Residency

The 2011 Paris Residency Application Deadline has passed and we are not currently accepting applications. The Paris Residency Program is reevaluated on a biannual basis, and does not have a regularly occurring deadline.

To keep up to date on all LMCC opportunities and events, including calls for residency applications, please sign up for This Month, our monthly email newsletter.

General Applicant Eligibility

Application to the Paris Residency is open to emerging and mid-career visual artists working in any media who are U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents and are also residents of New York City (including all five boroughs). Artists who do not reside in New York City are not eligible.

Collaborative pairs (no more than 2) are eligible to apply. Eligible collaborative applicants should submit one application and a joint biography and resume that demonstrate a history of collaboration. Collaborative pairs will receive only one stipend and one live/work space to share.

Artists who will be matriculated as students at any level during the residency session may not participate in the Paris Residency.

Selected applicant may not participate in a concurrent residency program while participating in the Paris Residency.

Writers and performing artists such as dancers, choreographers, and theater artists are not eligible to apply. This program is open to visual artists only.

Past participants in LMCC’s Artist Residency Programs (Swing Space, Workspace) may not be selected for any program in any two consecutive calendar years.

Residency Commitment and Expectations

The Paris Residency session is 6 months long. The selected artist will be expected to relocate to Paris for the duration of the residency session.

The Paris Residency is a self-guided and self-motivated experience. Artists selected for the Paris Residency are encouraged and should be prepared to seek out a community, facilities to produce work, and experiences they would not have without this opportunity.

Beyond facilities-related assistance with the live/work space at Cité des Arts, the residency does not provide hands-on support. There are no organized open studios, group activities, or events.

While the resident artist will receive a monthly cash stipend of € 1,296, the artist will be responsible for the following expenses:

REQUIRED:

  • Monthly rent, € 395 (single), € 505 (double)
  • Security deposit, € 395
  • Transportation to and from Paris
  • Daily transportation within Paris
  • Artist materials
  • Visa or other immigration documentation

OPTIONAL:

  • Mobile phone
  • Utilities (land line phone, internet, etc.)
  • Amenities beyond what is provided by Cité des Arts
  • Language class
  • Facility Fees (darkroom, ceramics, etc.)

Spouses and Families:
Artists may choose to attend the residency with a spouse or family. However, fees and restrictions for accommodating families do exist at Cité des Arts, a larger studio/flat is not available, and the monthly rent payment is larger. In addition, the stipend remains the same.

How to Apply

Detailed application guidelines are released in conjunction with each open call. In general, the Paris Residency application consists of two parts, an Online Application Form and submission of Work Samples (images, video, or audio).

On the Online Application Form Applicants are asked to provide:

  • Contact Information
  • Professional References
  • Narrative Biography
  • Resume
  • Artist Statement
  • Proposal
  • Work Sample Information

The Selection Process

We expect to receive approximately 200 applications from visual artists for the Paris Residency Program this session. Applicants will first be reviewed in New York City by a selection panel comprised of arts professionals, artists, and LMCC staff. The panelists change each session.

The New York City panel will assess and rank all applicants according to the following criteria:

  • Merit of past work based on submitted Work Sample;
  • Career record, based on Narrative Biography and Resume;
  • Proposed projects and ideas, as expressed in Proposal and Artist Statement;

LMCC is committed to maintaining diversity in all of its programs.

The panel will select 8-10 finalists whose applications will be forwarded to the Mayor’s Office of the City of Paris. In Paris, another panel will convene to make the final selection.
