In 2006-2007, a milestone year, Workspace expanded from a six-month to a nine-month program serving a diverse group of 28 emerging visual artists and two writers at once. Thanks to generous space donations from Silverstein Properties, Inc. and Trinity Real Estate, Workspace had the unique opportunity to inhabit two spaces at one time, 120 Broadway, the Equitable Building, and 200 Hudson Street respectively. Nimbly converting raw commercial space into artists studios in different locations throughout the years, the Workspace program continued to provide visual artists and writers working across all media and genres with free studio space in Lower Manhattan, a materials stipend, a community of peers, access to new audiences through presence on LMCC’s website and Open Studio Weekends, and professional development opportunities through weekly Salon Evenings. In 2006-2007, the Salon Evening series, evolved again to include orientation events, like resident-artist presentations and a walking tour of the Financial District; talks on practical issues like Legal Issues in Contemporary Art and Financial Planning for Artists; readings with well-known writers and artist talks with past Workspace residents; extensive potluck dinners; and individual studio visits with curators from major museums, directors from internationally renowned galleries, and arts professionals from all other corners of the field.
