Recess Now Accepting Applications for Session Residency: Deadline March 15

Recess, a non-profit artists workspace and proud recipient of a LMCC grant, is now accepting applications for Session Residency.

Session artists receive 2-3 months in one of our spaces, a small honorarium, and a materials budget to cover the material costs of their project. Recess is free and open to the public, and encourages artists to engage with their audience in a manner specific to their creative goals, using Recess as a studio, exhibition space, stage, and/or experimental platform. Artists have access to their space for the full duration of their residency and are expected to work on a daily basis or the equivalent of at least twenty hours per week. They will be given a small honorarium and a stipend based on the material needs of their residency. In conversation with Recess staff, artists designate their own work hours and the degree to which they coincide with public hours.

Artists may open their doors to present work, to stage performance-based activities, and/or to engage with public audiences while they work. Most resident artists will choose to be present during public hours (Tuesday – Saturday 12-6; Thursday 2-8), connecting with visitors through visual material, participatory or performance-based activities. If the artist chooses to work in private, when the space is closed to the public, his/her presence will be implied by the site-specific, workshop environment of work in process. Artists will be given keys to the space and may work when the space is closed.

Applications are due March 15th, 2012.

Full guidelines and the link to upload materials can be found here.

Recess is open to the public with locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Agora Gallery announces the 27th annual Chelsea International Fine Art Competition. This highly respected juried contest is a great opportunity for juror-selected artists to advance their careers and to maximize exposure to collectors and the New York art scene.

Awards include: cash prizes, online and print promotion and participation in a NYC art exhibition. The prizes are valued at a total of $55,000.

Entry fee: $35 for up to 5 images; $5 for each additional image.

Deadline: March 13, 2012.

The Chelsea International Fine Art Competition represents not just artists, but the countries and communities they hail from, each piece reflecting a little of humanity's many faceted soul. Out of respect for this and in an effort to grant joy to children in need, 15% of Agora Gallery's proceeds of sales resulting from the competition exhibition will be donated to Art Start, an award-winning, nationally recognized program. Art Start works with children and teens facing the daily uncertainties and instabilities of living in homeless shelters. Though these children face many obstacles, they have dreams. Art Start uses the arts to provide them with opportunities for success. It gives them the tools, structure, support and - most importantly - a chance to be heard.

For further information regarding the competition, prizes, eligibility and more, visit the competition website, email or call the gallery at 212-226-4151, Tues-Sat 11am-6pm.

BACKGROUND
The Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park developed Civic Action: A Vision for Long Island City in response to new development, rezoning, and an increasing residential population in the neighborhood in which the two institutions are located. They invited Ms. Miss and artists Natalie Jeremijenko, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and George Trakas—all known for their work in the public sphere—to assemble teams, including an architect or planner, to consider the future of the neighborhood, an area historically known as a place for the arts, as well as for industry and housing. The overarching goal of the project is to spark an ongoing dialogue among the creative sector, community stakeholders, and public agencies about how best to manage development. The four scenarios are on view at The Noguchi Museum through April 22, 2012. In May 2012, functional elements of each of the plans will be presented at Socrates Sculpture Park.

The River To River Festival was launched in 2002 by a coalition of organizations, including founding title sponsor American Express.

The Assignment

The River To River Festival is looking to hire a web and print design firm to update the current River To River Festival website with greater functionality, and to design complimentary print elements for the 2012 Festival, which runs from mid-June to mid-July with the launch of the campaign starting in April. The assignment will run from February through August 2012, with the possibility of transforming into a multi-year contract. The firm must have experience in the field with in-depth knowledge of Drupal software, as well as extensive print experience. Prior arts or festival experience is a plus but not essential.

The firm will work closely with the in-house Marketing team on design and implementation. Awareness of the Festival is generated through a major marketing campaign comprised of print ads in major daily and weekly publications; television and radio spots aired by Festival media partners; collateral distribution; an active Festival website; outdoor and transit banners and posters throughout the City. The firm will need to be able to make enhancements to the Festival website within a tight time-frame for 2012, as well as lay down the foundations for the long-term goal of creating a truly interactive site that features an interactive map, webcasts and facilities for online bookings. In addition, the firm will need to be able to juggle producing a number of print components throughout the Spring and Summer ranging from a program guide to venue signage to weekly print and online ads.

At different points in the season, there are many deliverables that need to be achieved in quick succession. The design firm must be capable of multi-tasking and meeting multiple strict deadlines. The website launches at the beginning of April 2012 and most of the print collateral design and production takes place between March through and mid July.

Details of Assignment

1. Website component (RiverToRiverNYC.com)
To design and implement the following updates to the website.

Re-work the home page and key supporting page and facilitate the navigation of events

Develop an Interactive Map, which locates the venues and all the surrounding participating businesses and tourist attractions related to the Festival

Re-design the e-newsletter (R2R Wire) to create shorter and more condensed format that highlights events and interactive content as well as contests and sponsor promotions

Develop a browsable format for the program guide online

Create a media room with access to high resolution media assets through a password

Build an archive of all past Festival material

Carry design updates through to social media sites Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and Flickr.

Ensure all updates are compatible with the mobile-friendly version of the site

2. Print component
To design and oversee printing of the following collateral:

Program guide: A user-friendly guide that captures the festival’s full program, map and sponsor elements and pushes readers to the website for more information. It will need to pull out highlights of the Festival as well.

Print and Online Advertising (does not include media placement or negotiation): Develop all of the mechanical templates for all media including weekly updates through delivery to publications and their online components. Advertising tends to run for 4-6 weeks in approximately four to six publications in black & white and color.

Outdoor Ads and Venue Signage (do not include production costs):

a. Stage designs for up to five (5) separate venues with up to 12 elements (including but not limited to pediment banner, back drop, two side banners per event)

b. Seven (7) versions (various dimensions) of Festival posters to be used in a variety of locations, including subway cars, PATH trains, retail stores, and airport light-boxes (some cases will likely require re-sizing)

Miscellaneous Collateral: Develop 1-2 different pieces of collateral pertaining to specific festival events. These pieces will either be a rack card or a piece that highlights specific Festival events/series (e.g. movies, dance) and can vary from a mailer to a handout used at an event.

Partner templates: To create consistency with all of our Partner materials, we would like to create templates that would be incorporated into their own artwork. This will include a branded element at the top of each web page, or a branded section on each piece of collateral.

For all elements of the scope of work, we are looking for a design firm that is flexible, responsive and able to deal quickly with any technical problems that may arise quickly and efficiently.

Proposal Requirements (suggestions listed below)

Please provide a detailed budget estimate for fees, including costs for website design and production; print design costs per item (do not include print costs), and any other out-of-pocket costs. This estimate can be in the form of a monthly retainer or as a project fee (based upon the possible scope(s) of work indicated above); if you choose to provide a project fee, please break it out by deliverable.

A statement of qualifications with examples of experience designing and building websites and/or print work as well as an outline of how you intend to work, who the team members would be (i.e. what is the structure of the team) were you awarded this contract.

Sample(s) of pertinent previous work.

A resume/CV of experience.

Three letters of reference from previous clients, including contact information.

The proposal is due no later than the close of business day on Monday, February 20, 2012.

Art for Change (AfC) is seeking proposals for artworks for its upcoming exhibition, Know Gays Aloud: Violence in the LGBT Communities of Color.
Art for Change is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides a forum for creating innovative art and media programs that inspire people to take an active role in social justice. By merging art and community, AfC provides a space to explore social issues and celebrate the richness of cultural diversity.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: SUNDAY, February 12th, 2012

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The LGBT community has struggled to ensure equality of their civil liberties for over three decades. Though there has been significant progress in obtaining equal rights in the United States, such as the recent vote that passed a marriage equality law in states like New York, violence still persists against the LGBT community especially in minority populations. The increase in hostility towards the LGBT community in the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Africa has led to a rise in murders and teen suicides, notably for the transgendered. In Puerto Rico, even though murders of transgendered are becoming more frequent, the government is seeking to take these crimes off of the list of hate crimes, further justifying these acts of violence. This exhibition aims to expose the violence and prejudice that LGBT communities of color have endured through systematic cultural and religious persecution. Art for Change seeks work that reacts to this injustice.

HOW TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL
interested artists may submit proposals for artworks consistent with the social justice platform of AfC, which address topics suggested, but not limited to, the description above. Artworks may include painting, drawing, photography, video, sculpture, performance art, interactive art, design, architecture, and site-specific installation. Proposals must include an Artist Statement describing in detail the proposed artwork and its relevance to the exhibition theme. Please state if this is a finished work, or a proposed new work. • 2-5 images of past-related work or actual finished proposal: 300 dpi or lower, no larger than 2MB each (please specify which work you are proposing for this exhibition or if it is a new work)

NYTIMES THEATER REVIEW | YOUNG JEAN LEE'S 'UNTITLED FEMINIST SHOW'
Beneath Pink Parasols, Identity in Stark Form
By CHARLES ISHERWOOD
Published: January 16, 2012

"Young Jean Lee is, hands down, the most adventurous downtown playwright of her generation. In previous shows this Korean-American writer has devised a comic revue about black identity politics, retailored Shakespeare’s “King Lear” and taken to the stage herself to perform a cabaret act mostly about death.

Ms. Lee has said in interviews that she is motivated, in part, by scaring herself nearly to death with each new endeavor. Her latest, called “Untitled Feminist Show” and presented as part of the Coil festival organized by Performance Space 122, may well be her most daunting attempt to push her talent in a new direction. This time she has dispensed entirely with words to create a frolicsome if fuzzy riff on the female body and the female spirit, through movement (and music) alone."

The New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation is pleased to announce its second annual Emerging Curator Open Call. The Emerging Curator Program offers an opportunity for a young-in-career curator to present a group show at the NARS Foundation Gallery. The aim of the program is to encourage new dialogue and to create a platform for artists and curators to experiment and exchange ideas. The curator is provided with exhibition space and administrative support to present innovative ideas and artworks in a unique gallery surrounded by an artist community and studios.

The curator is responsible for organizing and installing/de-installing the show and writing a short essay to accompany the exhibition. NARS Foundation will provide the gallery space, insurance for the artwork during the term of the exhibition, administrative support - including marketing, postcard invitations, email invites - and will organize an opening reception and a Curator’s Talk. A stipend of $200 will be awarded to the selected applicant to help subsidize the cost of organizing the exhibition. There will be no other financial support towards production of artwork, installation cost, or shipping/transportation of artwork.

Submission guidelines and application forms are available for download from our website. All applications must be delivered to the office by 5pm on March 2, 2012. A non-refundable application fee of $10 (USD) is required with each application.
