Thousand Islands, 1997
The artillery storage magazine underneath historic Fort Jay serves as background for Thousand Islands, 1997, a two-channel video installation. In the dark brick architecture of the military fort, the work becomes a reflection on the history of Governors Island and the deeper mystery of human behavior. At times curious, amusing, or sometimes even uncomfortable, this ambiguous work catches the viewer in a visual crossfire. Is this staged theater, a real bloody event, or only flying tomatoes?
Serge Spitzer has presented large-scale installations for over 30 years in many countries, and his work appears in prominent public and private collections. Thousand Islands was originally produced for the exhibition "Epicenter Ljubljana" curated by Harald Szeemann in 1997 at the Museum of Modern Art in Lubljana, Slovenia, and this is its first presentation in the US.
