Lost Futures on
Governors Island

Aug 11 - 7pm

Leo Villareal
Beckon, 2005

Leo Villareal transforms the darkened shape of the Island at night into a glowing, shifting shoreline. Using clusters of LED's, Beckon marks the Island's place in the harbor while mirroring the patterns and reflections of the waves and tides. The lights are best viewed after dark from Battery Park City, the Staten Island Ferry, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Villareal works with video, sound, and light to create sophisticated installations, which are outgrowths of his ongoing research in advanced computer programming. He is included in Visual Music currently on view at the Hirschorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC and has prepared a major site specific work for Extreme Abstraction at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. listen to interview [3.04 mb]
